All the colours are displayed in the dry
outback. These hills are locally called the Breakaways about 20km north of
Coober Pedy |

These hills are a main attraction of the desert landscape of Coober Pedy
locally known as the Breakaways. The opal levels have been eroded away. No
opal has been found on the plain |

Arial photo of the opal
field "Seventeen Mile" field. Millions of dollars of opal rough have
been mined from this field. It was at its peak production in the 1970s. Opal
was being found in huge runs on this field. |

Dust front with roll
cloud. All sorts of unusual weather is found in this outback opal town. |

A good lightning display
is a rare treat in the dry outback - this storm brought little rain and huge
winds that blew some roofs of houses in Coober Pedy. Most of our
rain is through summer thunder storms - very worrying if you have your
machinery underground on the opal fields. |

This picture is a
panorama view during a dust storm. While it was passing visibility was
about 5m. Dust storms like this happen about every 24 months in Coober Pedy
